This is no question at all, given Operation Barbarrossa caught the Soviet Army in its assembly areas. The field deployment of units for defense and attack are two very different postures. Units preparing to attack are most vulnerable immediately prior to 'jumping off'. They are concentrated and ready to advance. They are not dug in and organized for defense in depth. Supplies and artillery have been brought far forward to support an advance, not kept farther back to support a resilient defense. Logistics units are also packed up and ready to move forward to sustain the offensive.

The worst thing that can happen at that moment is for the enemy to launch an offensive while you are in that pre-attack posture. Even at the tactical corps, division and brigade levels 'spoiling attacks' are a well known gambit to rupture an imminent assault by the enemy.

Churchill's Eastern Mediterranean & Middle East campaigns in 1941-1942 make no sense except in the context of a) Defend the embryonic Zionist entity and b) an attempt to open a Southern flank against the oncoming Eastern Front. This would have been a very foolish and risky diversion of resources unless Churchill was certain Germany would be too committed to the East to threaten England. implied by Dwork, what Hitler personally intended to do to ordinary Jews, but what he felt would be the overall result if the Jewish *financial elites* repeated their pre-WWI behaviors. Those actions among those Jews helped bring about that War, brought the neutral U.S. into it on Britain's side (via the Balfour Declaration), and resulted in the subsequent destruction of the German economy. Those things helped

I have read many books on this aspect of WW2 and Antony Beevor's book, 'Berlin' is one of the best in my opinion.

However I think that one of the biggest mistakes in recent history was the fact that the Anglo/Americans allied themselves with Stalin's Russia. This enabled Russia to condemn many millions of people to death or the Gulags and to deny freedom to countries who came out of the end of WW2 believing that they would be free.

Eisenhower was outmanoeuvred by Stalin's lies and deceptions as to the course and direction of his (Stalin's) advance into Germany, and should have moved into Berlin when he had the chance.

Here in the U.K. we are still paying the price for that unholy alliance with communist Russia; Churchill's statement that 'the enemy of my enemy is my friend' might sound valid in a one dimensional linear world, but is meaningless in the real geopolitical world where the enemy of one's enemy might well be a greater enemy.
